Julieta Venegas
+ Gizmo Varillas
In this, her first London show in almost nine years, as part of her Parte Mia Tour, Mexican singer/songwriter Julieta Venegas performs her all-time hits (Me Voy, Limón y Sal, Andar Conmigo) along with many other highlights from her back catalogue in a stripped-down, accordion-led, organic and intimate format.
Her latest album, Algo Sucede won the prize for best Rock / Pop album in the 2016 Latin Grammys.
Since her debut in the nineties, Julieta has pushed her traditional Mexican ranchera influences into new directions and absorbed a whole host of twenty-first century styles. Growing up in Tijuana she became part of the border city’s first-wave forays into fusions of ska, reggae, rock and Mexican regional music.
Julieta then had huge hits with her record Si and later with Limón y Sal, and composed and performed the title track to the film Amores Perros, directed by the Oscar-winner Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu. She has sold eight million records, and has also won a Grammy, six Latin Grammys and eight MTV awards.
Tonight she is accompanied by regular collaborators, multi-instrumentalists Matias Silva and Sergio Saavedra.
‘A honeyed-yet-haunting voice and a sound that combines Latin folk, indie rock and serene pop.’ Rolling Stone
‘Her lyrics of wounded idealism and wrecked love affairs extend a rich Mexican tradition of popular music imbued in bitter fatalism.’ LA Times
Gizmo Varillas’ latest album addresses the general sense of isolationism growing across both sides of the Atlantic. Continuing his unique combination of folk tinged with South American tropical, Gizmo creates an intoxicating sound as timeless as it is genuinely exciting – he is a cult gem of a star in waiting.
