Part of Movimientos Festival
Danza Contemporanea de Cuba
In Havana not to dance is not to breathe. Dance is part of this city’s lifestyle and popular wisdom and it is this way of life and wisdom that informs Cuba’s most prestigious company, the Danza Contemporánea de Cuba. This company brings the heat and passion of the Caribbean island to the stage in an electrifying mix of contemporary dance and Afro-Caribbean and Spanish elements. For many years now the company has worked with top international choreographers. The results of this will be seen in Wolfsburg in 2012: Rafael Bonachela’s extremely aesthetic choreography Demo – N/crazy, as well as a very individual and self-deprecating version of Bizet’s opera Carmen – choreographed by Kenneth Kvarnström who himself has brought his own production to Wolfsburg this year. Yet as famous as the company is, it is rarely seen outside of Cuba. Their visit to Wolfsburg therefore is a rare opportunity of seeing this passionate, beautiful and exciting company.
