After the success of Duelo, which sold out Teatro Tivoli in 2019, Thiago Soares presents the official premiere of his new work Último Ato at the same venue, as part of a farewell tour.
Soares was a Principal Dancer with the Royal Ballet in London for 13 years. Último Ato combines references from classical ballet, with hip hop, afrobeat and contemporary dance.
‘In this show we have Brazilian artists with origins in samba, urban dance, even parkour,’ says Soares.’It’s a show that plays with the irony of actually being a last act, a farewell. They say that the dancer has his first death when he stops dancing, so it’s a game with death. It’s about closing one door and opening other,’ he explains.
Thiago Soares is an honorary Doctor from King’s College London and currently directs the Ballet de Monterrey, in Mexico, and in 2022, he debuted as a choreographer at the Rio carnival.
He attended Circus School in Rio de Janeiro, where he was born, at the age of 9. There he was encouraged to look for a dance school to improve his skills in breakdance and hip-hop. At 15 he started studying classical dance at Centro de Dança Rio, after which he joined the corps de ballet at Theatro Municipal in Rio de Janeiro, and later studied at the Ballet Kirov, becoming the second foreigner to join the company in its 100-year history. The following year, he was invited to join the corps de ballet at the Royal Ballet in London. As the company’s principal dancer between 2006 and 2019, Thiago performed in productions such as Onegin, La Bayadère, Swan Lake, Coppélia and Romeo and Juliet.
