Las salseras – a tribute to Celia Cruz
Las Salseras is a new all-star orchestra made up of 10 of the Latin and UK top female salsa musicians, getting together for a one-night-only tribute to the Queen of Salsa, Celia Cruz, on her centenary.
Celia Cruz, the “Queen of Salsa,” was a Cuban vocalist and performer whose powerful voice, electrifying stage presence, and signature cry of “Azúcar!” made her a global icon. With a career spanning over five decades, she broke barriers and questioned stereotypes in the world of Latin music, won multiple Grammy Awards, and brought Afro-Cuban rhythms to the world stage with her unique grace and charisma. Her vibrant style and unstoppable energy made her not just a musical legend, but a symbol of joy, resilience, and cultural pride.
Put together and directed by renowned Latina pianist Eliane Correa, the orchestra will be fronted by Afro-Latin powerhouse Juanita Euka on lead vocals, whose renditions of Celia’s anthems have graced some of the UK’s largest stages such as the Barbican and Glastonbury Festival.
This tribute performance to the Queen of Salsa will include her biggest hits such as La Vida es un Carnaval, Quimbara and Oye Cómo Va, as well as some lesser-known handpicked gems from her vast repertoire.
Las Salseras is the first all-star female salsa band of its calibre in the UK, and includes Madrid-based Cuban percussionists Madelin Espinosa and Lidia María Madruga (who also sings lead vocals in legendary Cuban fusion band Interactivo) and multipercussion virtuosa Gala Celia from Argentina. The women of this orchestra have played with a range of salsa and Cuban music stars such as Mayito Rivera of Los Van Van, multi-Latin Grammy winner Maite Hontelé, Jimmy Bosch and more, and currently tour with household names such as Hans Zimmer, Manuel Carrasco and Jessie Ware, to name a few.
Expect a joyous, high-octane and musically masterful performance by the creme de la creme of salsa musicianship who, by the way, also happen to be women.
