New Regency Orchestra’s set Downstairs @ Total Refreshment Centre will premiere new commissions from Nathaniel Cross, Momoko Gill and Eliane Correa and the band supported by Performing Rights Society Foundation.
Over the past few years, New Regency Orchestra has taken the music scene by storm. With its powerful 12-piece horn section, a razor-sharp 5-piece rhythm section, and dynamic NRO dancers, the orchestra breathes new life into the golden age of mambo and Latin jazz with electrifying energy and bold new arrangements.
Drawing inspiration from the vibrant fusion of jazz and Latin music in New York from the 1950s to the 1970s, when the sound of jazz luminaries Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker collided with the Cuban roots of Chano Pozo and Machito, New Regency Orchestra adds a contemporary London spin. Powered by some of the capital’s finest Latin music and jazz talent, the group pushes boundaries and elevates the genre to thrilling new heights.
“A hepcat big band with a vibe straight out of the Nuyorican barrios…a killer rhythm section, mighty wall of horns and moments of sparkling call-and-response between instruments and dancers – given a 21st century London twist with new influences, arrangements and attitude.” Evening Standard
“Remember New Regency Orchestra. See how they grow!” Gilles Peterson BBC 6 Music
